Lisa Hannigan - Silent Night

'Silent Night'
Lisa Hannigan

Silent night, broken night
All is fallen when you take your flight
I found some hate for you
Just for show
You found some love for me
Thinking I'd go
Don't keep me from crying to sleep
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, moonlit night
Nothing's changed
Nothing is right
I should be stronger than weeping alone
You should be weaker than sending me home
I can't stop you fighting to sleep
Sleep in heavely peace

Bhelliom Live at Penang Metal Tyrants

Weather wasn't good when we arrived at Penang's Bus Station (Sungai Nibong). Which kinda summarised the mood for this trip. Nothing much to look forward to except for cheap food/beer and good company.

The Guesthouse (with good-looking babes hanging around)

A backpackers' area with nightlife bursting with all kinds of local flavours along the street stalls.

The Venue (dodgy as Penang hell)

Here's to Bret. Thanks for the jamming session up north.

Bhelliom Live at Penang

Bhelliom's gig this time round at Penang.
Organised by Penang Metal Tyrants. :)
Yet another weekend getaway!

Smaart Training

Yeah, just attended training for Smaart Software last week. Appreciate that Proaktiv guys got the guy from Rational Acoustics to conduct the training. But there was too much to cover in a day. Hopefully they'll be having a longer course next year.

Thanks Laz!

IGNITE! Music Festival video

Here's a little something I did for IGNITE! Music Festival. Enjoy!

Soundcraft's SI3

Great thanks to E&E for inviting us down for a demo by Soundcraft!

Setup in the room was Soundcraft's Vi4 and Si3. Both of which were built to target the same application and market. Last year's IGNITE! Music Festival 2008, we had the opportunity to have the Vi4 as our FOH console. Although we never had a chance to touch any of Soundcraft's digital babies, the workflow was so simple that the techs mastered within a couple of days fooling with it.

Now, Vi4 has got the Si3 for company. Just launched late last year, Si3 is a simple 'multi-tool' with no-frills to boot.

Here is one of very few digital boards without a graphical representation for your parametric EQs. I like it this way a lot more as you're forced to use your ears more than your eyes.
Something I can't figure out is why only 8 analog insert points when you have 64 channels on board? Is is a design limitation?

Thambi K Seow Live @ Espanade Waterfront

Singapore is seriously lacking in humour. I mean, the last such fun was displayed, Boredphucks was banned. Tongue in cheek was apparantly not tolerated, and thus explains the lack of voice when our tongues were removed.

It was obvious the band had a great time, and so did the crowd. We didn't crowd in the drizzle for screaming solos or perfect pitched performance. Just pure fun in celebrating our differences.

It was pleasant to find that esplanade did keep their loudness in check this time round. Compared to Baybeats last year, the spanking new d&b J-series were just roaring at you right in your face. Although the side coverage were either not on or not balanced, but thanks for being ear-friendly!

Recording Veena

The same fellows are back again to record some voiceovers/backing tracks for their coming drama performance.

Previously we used a Neumann U87 to record the Veena. This time round I chose the M149. Reason? Love to try the compare the difference between a tube microphone and the lack of. Will be heading back to the studio to do the A/B comparison.

The same problems surfaced again like irritating pop-up windows. Bridge noises, fret noises... Maybe it's meant to be. The Gamelan instructor did mention, 'If it's in time, then it's not traditional.'

What do you think?

Recording Gamelan

One weekend of Gamelan recording wasn't as easy as it looked. The Zee Monster is at its most powerful here. And we had a tough time fighting it. Thankfully we had all our weapons, such as Redbull, Coffee, snacks, etc...

The tracking sessions went pretty well. We hooked up a Digidesign D-show profile with a Mac loaded with Protools LE. All signals came into the D-show, using it's preamps and direct out into Protools LE via firewire. The D-show also manages the monitor sends for all the musicians with the help from Aviom personal monitoring system as well.

The group couldn't play individually and the bleed from drums was pretty bad. All we can do is to minimise the bleed as best we could.

Konsert Power Rock '09

Nope, no spelling errors there. But this is one of the most popular gig this year in a mat rock's calender.

1 band with members from various successful bands in Malaysia. Total of 5 vocalists, each belting 5 to 6 of their own most celebrated songs in malay rock history. Closing the show at the climax is Awie from Wings.

Initially was quite excited about this show. But I guess the higher your expectations, the harder the fall. I came into setup hoping to learn, but not sure where did their 20plus years of experience translate into.

But the good thing is I managed to get Thub to try out Alesis Drum module D4 together with the kick mic. Results were not bad, I thought. Even the press thought so too, praising the in-house soundman. Hopefully this is a justification for boss to approve a set of triggers and module. :)
